This year’s edition of the New Mexico Bowl will feature two teams looking for a positive to end their 2020 season. The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors take on the Houston Cougars in Texas on Christmas Eve.
Date: Thursday, Dec. 24, 2020
Time: 3:30 p.m. EST
Venue: Toyota Stadium, Frisco, TX
Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (4-4)
The Warriors are coming off of a win over UNLV, in which they had a solid performance on the road to close out the game 38-21. This was a quick rebound after losing to San Jose State University earlier in the month, 35-24.
They average 26 points per game while giving up 29.3. Obviously, this offensive performance is not something they can continue to put forth if they want to close out the year strong.
On offense they average 398.5 total yards a game while allowing 421.5. Again, this is another key stat to look at as they have had trouble outperforming their opponents.
On defense they typically hold their opponents to 230.9 rushing yards. They do even better on passing defense at 190.6 each game.
Houston Cougars (3-4)
The Cougars are returning to action after a tough loss to Memphis on the 12th of December. In that game, they fell short while visiting the Tigers 30-27.
They average 32.3 points per game while allowing 32.6. With those numbers in mind, you can see how each of their games have appeared to be very close.
On offense they average 423.4 total yards a game while giving up 417.3. Besides the point averages, you can also see how each of their games have been close in this regard.
On defense they typically stop opponents well on rushing, giving up only 172.7 a game. However, they drop the ball when it comes to defending against pass yards as they give up 244.6 a game.

Both of these teams have almost identical records and performances throughout the 2020 season. Even with limited games played for both teams, you can still see some key differences on how well they have performed thus far.
Hawaii has gone 3-5 against the spread while Houston has gone 3-4 against the spread. So only one time Hawaii has gone opposite here, while Houston’s record remains the same.
Houston will most likely win this one. However, Hawaii makes it very appealing to close the gap within a touchdown. With that in mind, you can still have winning bets either way you choose.
That being said, this year more than any other, you must be careful with playing these games where the games are not being played for several days away due to good ole Covid-19. The fact is, we handicap these games on the basis of the information that we have at the time of publication however players get hurt in practice, players decide not to play in the bowl game and there is also a motivational factor that we need to figure out, and of course, this year we have Covid-19. We will be studying this game and reviewing the numbers several times leading up to the game.
